A WORD ABOUT HOMEWORK:  Those who have read the scripture and pondered the homework questions prior to Betsey’s message, get SO MUCH MORE from the message and our small group time than those who don’t.   PLEASE TAKE TIME TO DO THE HOMEWORK–for your benefit, for the group’s benefit, as a way to respect those who are serving and, most of all, FOR THE GLORY OF GOD!

FORGIVENESS: BY WORKS OR BY THE CROSS

Colossians 2:8-23

Please read the verses in at least two versions, noting any questions you have for the Lord. Ask yourself as you read: what does this passage tell me about God’s heart, His personal love for

me, and howI can show His heart to others.

1. What descriptions of Christ in Col. 2:8-23 echo some of the ideas in Col. 1:15-20? What meaning do they have to you, personally?

2. Colossians 1:10b speaks of “increasing in the knowledge of God.” But this is not simply learning more information about Him. Listening to the Language of the Bible by Tverberg and Okkema tells us that in Hebrew, the phrase, “knowledge of God” (da’at elohim) stresses knowing from experience and relationship; when used in terms of knowing people , it means caring for them and acting upon that love. What, then, is Paul praying for the Colossians to grow in?

Think about it: are you trying to fill your mind with facts ABOUT God, or are you trying to “know” Him in a personal way? How might you grow in the latter?

3. Can you think of any “human traditions” that have been added to the Christianity you have been taught ? Do these traditions distract from your trust in “Christ alone”?
