Humility – Willing to be Known for Who We Really Are

Phil 2:5-11
5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in
very nature[a] God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own
advantage; 7 rather, he made himself nothing, by taking the very nature[b] of a servant, being made
in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming
obedient to death — even death on a cross! 9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and
gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should
bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus
Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Matthew 11:28-30
28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke
upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your
souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Micah 6:9
Listen! The Lord is calling to the city –and to fear your name is wisdom— “Heed the rod and the
One who appointed it.

Isaiah 66:2
Has not my hand made all these things, and so they came into being?” declares the Lord.
“These are the ones I look on with favor: those who are humble and contrite in spirit, and who
tremble at my word.

James 4:6
But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but shows favor
to the humble.”

Ephesians 4:2-3
2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. 3 Make every
effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.

Colossians 3:12
12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion,
kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.

1 Peter 5:5-6
5 In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe
yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud but shows favor to
the humble” 6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in
due time.

Titus 3:1-2
1 Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do
whatever is good, 2 to slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and always to be gentle
toward everyone.

Matthew 18:4
4 Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

James 4:10
10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

1 Peter 5:5-6
5 In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe
yourselves with humility toward one another, because,“God opposes the proud, but shows favor to
the humble.” 6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in
due time.

Fruits of a Humble Life

2 Chronicles 7:4
4 Then the king and all the people offered sacrifices before the Lord.

2 Chronicles 34:27
27 Because your heart was responsive and you humbled yourself before God when you heard
what he spoke against this place and its people, and because you humbled yourself before me and
tore your robes and wept in my presence, I have heard you, declares the Lord.

Complete Yieldedness and Dependence Upon God

Matthew 26:36-46
36 Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here
while I go over there and pray.” 37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and
he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with
sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”
39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible,
may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”
40 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Couldn’t you men keep watch with
me for one hour?” he asked Peter. 41 “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The
spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
42 He went away a second time and prayed, “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken
away unless I drink it, may your will be done.”
43 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. 44 So he
left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing.
45 Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the
hour has come, and the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise! Let us go! Here
comes my betrayer!”

Luke 22:40-46
40 On reaching the place, he said to them, “Pray that you will not fall into temptation.” 41 He
withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, 42 “Father, if you are willing,
take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.” 43 An angel from heaven appeared to
him and strengthened him. 44 And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was
like drops of blood falling to the ground.[a]
45 When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted
from sorrow. 46 “Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up and pray so that you will not fall
into temptation.”

John 15:5
5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit;
apart from me you can do nothing.

Psalms 51:17
17 My sacrifice, O God, is[a] a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise.
