    he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.

You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.

Exodus 34:7
maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation.”

God as Father in Heaven

Isaiah 9:6
For to us a child is born,
 to us a son is given,
 and the government will be on his shoulders.
 And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Psalms 68:5
A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling.

Matthew 6:9
“This, then, is how you should pray:
“‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,

God as Father in Heaven,
Knows us and Loves Us Completely

Psalms 139
1
You have searched me, Lord,  and you know me.
2 You know when I sit and when I rise;
you perceive my thoughts from afar.
3 You discern my going out and my lying down;  you are familiar with all my ways.
4 Before a word is on my tongue, you, Lord, know it completely.
5 You hem me in behind and before,  and you lay your hand upon me.
6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,  too lofty for me to attain.
7 Where can I go from your Spirit?
 Where can I flee from your presence?
8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
9 If I rise on the wings of the dawn,  if I settle on the far side of the sea,
10 even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.
11 If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me
 and the light become night around me,”
12 even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day,
for darkness is as light to you.
13 For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
    your works are wonderful,  I know that full well.
15 My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place,
 when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
16 Your eyes saw my unformed body;  all the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be.
17 How precious to me are your thoughts, God!  How vast is the sum of them!
18 Were I to count them,
 they would outnumber the grains of sand—
    when I awake, I am still with you.
19 If only you, God, would slay the wicked!
  Away from me, you who are bloodthirsty!
20 They speak of you with evil intent;
 your adversaries misuse your name.
21 Do I not hate those who hate you, Lord,
 and abhor those who are in rebellion against you?
22 I have nothing but hatred for them;
 I count them my enemies.
23 Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.
24 See if there is any offensive way in me,  and lead me in the way everlasting.

Our Father’s Loving Heart

Matt 10:29-30
29
Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. 30 And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.

Romans 5:8
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Deut 33:12
About Benjamin he said: “Let the beloved of the Lord rest secure in him,  for he shields him all day long,  and the one the Lord loves rests between his shoulders.”

1 John 3:1
See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.

Galatians 4:4-7
But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.” So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir.

John 10:3
The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.

Romans 8:15
15
The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship.  And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.”

Jeremiah 31:3
The Lord appeared to us in the past, saying: “I have loved you with an everlasting love;
  I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.

Our Heavenly Father is Always Present:

Psalm 139:7-12
7
Where can I go from your Spirit?
 Where can I flee from your presence?
8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
9 If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea,
10 even there your hand will guide me,  your right hand will hold me fast.
11 If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,”
12 even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.

Our Father’s Present and Attentive Heart

Isaiah 9:6
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders.  And he will be called  Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
 Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

Matt 6:8, 25-32
8. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? 28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.

2 Corinthians 1:3
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort,

Our Father Has Created Us Uniquely with Purpose

Psalms 139:13-18
13
For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,  I know that full well.
15 My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
16 Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be.
17 How precious to me are your thoughts, God!
  How vast is the sum of them!
18 Were I to count them,  they would outnumber the grains of sand—
   when I awake, I am still with you.

Our Father’s Giving Heart

Matt 7:11
11
If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!

Hebrews 12:7-13
Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father? If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all. Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits and live! 10 They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness. 11 No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. 12 Therefore, strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees. 13 “Make level paths for your feet,”[a] so that the lame may not be disabled, but rather healed.

1 Peter 1:17
17
Since you call on a Father who judges each person’s work impartially, live out your time as foreigners here in reverent fear.

3

4 Take delight in the Lord,  and he will give you the desires of your heart.
5 Commit your way to the Lord;
 trust in him and he will do this:

Gal 4:4-7
But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba,[b] Father.” So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir.

Isaiah 64:8
Yet you, Lord, are our Father.
 We are the clay, you are the potter;
 we are all the work of your hand.

Psalms 139:24
See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

23

Power to Change Hearts

Amos 7:7-9
This is what he showed me: The Lord was standing by a wall that had been built true to plumb, with a plumb linein his hand. And the Lord asked me, “What do you see, Amos?” “A plumb line,” I replied. Then the Lord said, “Look, I am setting a plumb line among my people Israel; I will spare them no longer. 9“The high places of Isaac will be destroyed
    and the sanctuaries of Israel will be ruined;
    with my sword I will rise against the house of Jeroboam.”

9
The heart is deceitful above all things, and beyond cure.  Who can understand it?
10 “I the Lord search the heart
 and examine the mind,
 to reward each person according to their conduct, according to what their deeds deserve.”

Ezekiel 36:26,27
26
The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure.
  Who can understand it?
27 “I the Lord search the heart, and examine the mind,
 to reward each person according to their conduct,
 according to what their deeds deserve.”

Hebrews 8:10
This is the covenant I will establish with the people of Israel
 after that time, declares the Lord. I will put my laws in their minds
and write them on their hearts.
I will be their God,
 and they will be my people.

Titus 2:11-14
11
For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. 12 It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, 13 while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, 14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.

Hebrews 4:14-16
14
Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven,[a] Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. 16 Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

James 4:6
But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says:“God opposes the proud
 but shows favor to the humble.”

John 15:5
“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.

Ephesians 4:29
29
Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

Romans 12:6
We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith;

1 Peter 4:10
10
Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.

Candidates for Grace

The Sinner

Romans 3:23-24
23
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.

Romans 5:20-21
20
The law was brought in so that the trespass might increase. But where sin increased, grace increased all the more, 21 so that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

The Powerless

Romans 5:6, 8
You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly.
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

The Weak

2 Corinthians 12:9,10
But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 10 That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

The Needy

Hebrews 4:14-16
14
Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven,[a] Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. 16 Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

The Humble

James 4:5
Or do you think Scripture says without reason that he jealously longs for the spirit he has caused to dwell in us?

1 Peter 5:5,6
In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud, but shows favor to the humble.”
Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.
