The Cross

Joshua 10:22

22 Joshua said, “Open the
mouth of the cave and bring those five kings out to me.”

Deut 21:22-23

22 If someone guilty of a capital offense is put to
death and their body is exposed on a pole,
23 you must not leave the
body hanging on the pole overnight. Be sure to bury it that same day, because
anyone who is hung on a pole is under God’s curse. You must not desecrate the
land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance.

Galatians 3:13

13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by
becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on
a pole.”

John 14:9

Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even
after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen
the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

John 13:13-15

13 “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly
so, for that is what I am.
14 Now that I, your Lord
and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.
15 I have set you an
example that you should do as I have done for you.

1 John 3:8

The one who does what is sinful is of the devil,
because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of
God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work.

Col 1:19-22

19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness
dwell in him,
20 and through him to reconcile to himself all
things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through
his blood, shed on the cross.

21 Once you were alienated from God and were enemies
in your minds because of your evil behavior.
22 But now he has
reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in
his sight, without blemish and free from accusation—

Col 2:13-15

13 When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with
Christ. He forgave us all our sins,
14 having canceled the
charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he
has taken it away, nailing it to the cross.
15 And having disarmed
the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over
them by the cross.

Eph 2:11-22

11 Therefore, remember that formerly you who are
Gentiles by birth and called “uncircumcised” by those who call themselves “the
circumcision” (which is done in the body by human hands)—
12 remember that at that
time you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and
foreigners to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the
world.
13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away
have been brought near by the blood of Christ
.

14 For he himself is our peace, who has made the two
groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility,
15 by setting aside in
his flesh the law with its commands and regulations. His purpose was to create
in himself one new humanity out of the two, thus
making peace,
16 and in one body to reconcile both of them to God
through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility.
17 He came and preached
peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near.
18 For through him we
both have access to the Father by one Spirit.

19 Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and
strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his
household,
20 built on the foundation of the apostles and
prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone.
21 In him the whole
building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord.
22 And in him you too are
being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.

Created in the Image of God

Ephesians 2:10

10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ
Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Gen 1:26-27

26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so
that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the
livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along
the ground.”

So
God created mankind in his own image,
in the image of God he
created them;
male and female he created them.

Gen 2:7

Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of
the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man
became a living being.

Gen 3:19

“By
the sweat of your brow
 you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken;
for dust you are
and to dust you will return.”

Gen 1:26-27 (see above)

Man Made to be Free

Gen 1:31

31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very
good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.

Gen 2:9

The Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of
the ground—trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the
middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of
good and evil.

Gen 2:16

16 And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free
to eat from any tree in the garden;

Gen 3:8-9

Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the
Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid
from the Lord God among the trees of the garden.
But the Lord God
called to the man, “Where are you?”

Romans 8:2, 21

because through Christ Jesus the law of the
Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.

21 that the creation
itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom
and glory of the children of God.

An Overview of Sin

Romans 3:10, 24

10 As it is written:“There
is no one righteous, not even one;

24 and all are justified freely by his grace through
the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.

Isaiah 53:6

We
all, like sheep, have gone astray,
 each of us has turned
to our own way;  and the Lord has laid on him
 the iniquity of us
all.

Ephesians 4:18

18 They are darkened in their understanding and
separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to
the hardening of their hearts.

Psalms 51:4

Against
you, you only, have I sinned
 and done what is evil in your sight;
so you are right in
your verdict
and justified when you judge.

James 4:17

If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do
and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.

Gen 3:1-5

Now the serpent was more crafty
than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did
God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”

The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit
from the trees in the garden,
but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle
of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’”

“You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to
the woman.
“For God knows that when you eat from it your
eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

Romans 14:23

23 But whoever has doubts is condemned if they eat,
because their eating is not from faith; and everything that does not come from
faith is sin.

Gen 2:15-17

15 The Lord God took the man and put him in the
Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.
16 And the Lord God
commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden;
17 but you must not eat
from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you
will certainly die.”

Gen 3:5
(see above)

Isaiah 14:12-15

How you have fallen from heaven, morning
star, son of the dawn!
 You have been cast down
to the earth, you who once laid low the nations!

13

You said in your heart, “I will ascend to the heavens;
 I will raise my throne above the stars of God;
I will sit enthroned on the mount of
assembly,

on the utmost heights of Mount Zaphon.

14

I will ascend above the tops of the clouds;
  I will make myself
like the Most High.”

15

But
you are brought down to the realm of the dead,
 to the depths of the
pit.

1 John 2:15-17

15 Do not love the world or anything in the world.
If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them.
16 For everything in the
world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of
life—comes not from the Father but from the world.
17 The world and its
desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.

Gen 2:15-17
(see above)

Gen 3:6-7

When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was
good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom,
she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her,
and he ate it.
Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and
they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made
coverings for themselves.

The Consequences of Sin

Romans 1:18-32

18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven
against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by
their wickedness,
19 since what may be known about God is plain to
them, because God has made it plain to them.
20 For since the creation
of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine
nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made,
so that people are without excuse.

21 For although they knew God, they neither
glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile
and their foolish hearts were darkened.
22 Although they claimed
to be wise, they became fools
23 and exchanged the
glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and
birds and animals and reptiles.

24 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful
desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies
with one another.
25 They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and
worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is
forever praised. Amen.

26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful
lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones.
27 In the same way the
men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for
one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in
themselves the due penalty for their error.

28 Furthermore, just as they did not think it
worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved
mind, so that they do what ought not to be done.
29 They have become
filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full
of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips,
30 slanderers,
God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil;
they disobey their parents;
31 they have no
understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy.
32 Although they know
God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not
only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice
them.

Gen 3:7-8

Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and
they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made
coverings for themselves.

Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the
Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid
from the Lord God among the trees of the garden.

1 John 1:9

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just
and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Gen 3:9-13

But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are
you?”

10 He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I
was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.”

11 And he said, “Who told you that you were naked?
Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?”

12 The man said, “The woman you put here with
me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”

13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is
this you have done?”

The
woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

Numbers 32:23

23 “But if you fail to do this, you will be sinning
against the Lord; and you may be sure that your sin will find you out.

Galatians
6:7

Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man
reaps what he sows.

Gen 3:23-24

23 So the Lord God banished him from the Garden of
Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken.
24 After he drove the man
out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming
sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.

Ephesians 2:1-3

As
for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins,
in which you used to
live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom
of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.
All of us also lived
among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its
desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath.

Romans 7:14-25

We know that the law is spiritual; but I am
unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin.
15 I do not understand
what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.
16 And if I do what I do
not want to do, I agree that the law is good.
17 As it is, it is no
longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me.
18 For I know that good
itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the
desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.
19 For I do not do the
good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing.
20 Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but
it is sin living in me that does it.

21 So I find this law at work: Although I want to do
good, evil is right there with me.
22 For in my inner being
I delight in God’s law;
23 but I see another law
at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner
of the law of sin at work within me.
24 What a wretched man I
am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?
25 Thanks be to God, who
delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!

So
then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law, but in my sinful nature a
slave to the law of sin.

Romans 3:23-24

23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory
of God,
24 and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that
came by Christ Jesus.

Ezekiel 18:4,20

For everyone belongs to me, the parent as well as
the child—both alike belong to me. The one who sins is the one who will
die.

20 The one who sins is the one who will die. The
child will not share the guilt of the parent, nor will the parent share the
guilt of the child. The righteousness of the righteous will be credited to
them, and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against them.

Romans 6:23

23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of
God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Revelation 20:11-15

11 Then I saw a great white throne and him who was
seated on it. The earth and the heavens fled from his presence, and there was
no place for them.
12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing
before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the
book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded
in the books.
13 The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and
death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged
according to what they had done.
14 Then death and Hades
were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death.
15 Anyone whose name was
not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.

Titus 3:3-8

At one time we too were foolish, disobedient,
deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in
malice and envy, being hated and hating one another.
But when the kindness
and love of God our Savior appeared,
he saved us, not
because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us
through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit,
whom he poured out on
us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior,
so that, having been
justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.
This is a trustworthy
saying. And I want you to stress these things, so that those who have trusted
in God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good. These things
are excellent and profitable for everyone.
